Really enjoyed this one, Tom! The coda at the end about the Starmer government is helpful - I recently read Freedman's Failed State and found it really informative and provocative.
Thanks Laurent! To my shame, I haven't gotten to that yet, though it is high on my to-read list (I'm actually reading a book by his dad, Laurence Freedman, at the moment!) If you are in the market for another book in the same vein as Sam's, then Torsten Bell's "Great Britain? How We Get Our Future Back" could be worth checking out. I also haven't read that yet, but Bell is incredibly thoughtful and incisive. He formerly ran the Resolution Foundation think tank, was elected an MP last year and just became a Minister this week.
